Mobile has fault in battery conection

Question

mobile will show you it is ringing out then will click out to get it working you have to switch off take battery out replace battery after 60 seconds
and restart phone .I find it hard to work out if this phone is working or not. it was bought late in 2007 as we are aged we use it as emergency
telecom wants me to change phones and buy another contract
