Model 6230- presser foot lifter won't move presser...

Question

I just got this model 6230 PFAFF sewing machine from my elderly mother. It has not been used in 5 -8 yrs. The "presser foot lifter" won't move the presser foot down. When alot of pressure is used on the presser foot it will go down and then the "presser foot lever " will lift it up again, but not down. It feels as if it is extremely "gunked up" some how.

Thanks for any ideas on what to do.
