  1. The currently produced Alpha III has a one-piece plastic fin can/motor mount unit, so unless you haven't built the rocket yet then you're limited to 18mm motors.

If you haven't built the rocket yet, then the options to substitute a different motor mount and basswood fins are open.  (But, you probably would not have asked the question if you were planning to install a larger mount.)

The C6-5 and C6-7 motors are suggested for the Alpha III.

Quest was supposed to introduce a D-impulse 18mm motor, but it has yet to materialize.

  2. An Alpha III rocket will take a C6 engine outof the box.  However,  if you correctly install the D-E engine mount (sold seperately by Estes) the Alpha III can be flown on an E engine.  You will also have to give it the old fashioned bass wood fins like when I was a kid.  Trace around the plastic fins on cardboard, then copy them onto your bass wood, and cut them out carefully.  It gives and amazingly stable flight.  But I would recommend a long (12 second parachute delay) and a very small parachute for fast recovery, so you do not lose your rocket!

  3. A C6-7 That's about the largest they make in that class.

I haven't played with those in 30 years but the numbers are still the same.
