Modem/Broadband Trouble?

Okay so we have a 2wire modem and recently my mom bought a new laptop and a Lynksys wireless router. For about a week everything worked fine. She used the wireless and I used the broadband connection. Now the broadband light is orange and I cannot connect to the internet at all on My computer. I have to use hers. I cannot even install the wireless on mine now that the connection is bad. I tried to reset the modem, and I called the phone company and they couldnt see any problem. Is Lynksys interferring with my broadband? Are the modem and router too close? Someone Help I need my internet back.

  1. What you need to do is connect you ethernet cable from the computer to the router, then use another ethernet cable and conncet the modem to port 1 on the router. You also need a phone cable to pluge the DSL line into the wall jack. This should solve your problem. If any of the lights are not green than you should call your Internet service provider. The main computer has to be always pluged in.

  2. You need either to connect the modem to the line and then the router to the mode, or for dsl replace the modem with the router totally. ALL machines must be connected to the router. You can not connect both to the line. You should never connect anything to the modem except the router.

  3. First, all 2wire Modems are all routers these days. (2wire calls them Home Gateways = router)

So you are attempting to connect two routers! That can be very problematic for the users particularly when they are both on the same network IP range and subnet ranges. (Linksys is 192.168.1.x as is the 2wire.)

Is there some reason you can't just use the 2wire?  If should have four local ports on the back, as well as wireless!  (The 2wire wireless will appear as 2wireXXX where x*x is the last three numbers of the serial number.) If there is only ONE port on the two wire, all you need is a switch to add more.

2wire uses encryption as standard - the code is on the label of the unit between the braces [10digit code].

The 2wire units are actually very good very solid routers! You can get technical help at http://2wire.com

You can get the linksys to work with this, if you really need to, but the IP of the linksys has to be in the DMZ of the 2wire and the LAN range of the linksys needs to be changed to another range (like 192.168.2.x) from its default settings! Or all DHCP functions of the Linksys need to be disabled!
