Activision’s first DLC pack for the latest instalment in Call of Duty finally hits Sony’s console, though only for CoD Elite Premium subscribers.
The Call of Duty franchise earns more revenue than any other video game franchise on the planet. The past three titles in the series have broken world records for fastest selling video games in history, with Modern Warfare 3 earning a staggering $775-million
in just five days following its release.
If anyone thought the stream of sales revenue would end there, well then they obviously do not know how well the game sells and how good Activision are at finding more ways to earn money from the same title.
Call of Duty Elite was launched with Modern Warfare 3 as a social networking platform based on the Call of Duty universe. It was free to join as long as one had a copy of the latest Modern Warfare title.
However, there was also a premium subscription offering, which promised users access to exclusive offers and would allow them to get their hands on DLC and other content earlier than everyone else.
Activision also tend to release content on the Xbox 360 before it makes its way onto the PlayStation 3 and this has been the case once again. A perfect example of this is how the Liberation and Piazza DLC pack which is already on offer on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace,
has just hit the PlayStation Store.
It gets even better as the DLC Pack is currently only available to those users who are Premium members on Call of Duty Elite, with the rest of the demographic having to wait a little longer before they get their hands on the content.
It seems that the trend is set to continue as the next DLC pack which has already been released on the Xbox 360 with the title ‘Overwatch’ will be hitting the PlayStation Store on the 29th of March. Again, exclusively for the Premium subscribers
of the Elite service.
Love it or hate it, it seems restricted access to content is the way Activision have decided to go with their DLC and that trend seems to be here to stay.
