Modesto Vazquez says goodbye to Davis Cup captaincy after three years – Tennis News
Modesto Vazquez relationship with the Argentine tennis ace, David Nalbandian, was not fruitful in his tenure as the Captain of Argentine’s Davis Cup team; hence, it proved to be the main reason for his resignation from the captain’s
post.
He resigned from the post after Argentina’s loss at the Davis Cup Final earlier this month. He had splendid three years as a captain but it ended is despair because his relationship with one of team member was not so enjoyable.
Vazquez was not at all happy from the attitude of the former world number three, Nalbandian, and stated that he is not a positive leader as well as a character to have in a team. It was not the decision that was made in isolation.
Argentine’s Tennis Association didn’t put forth their will to renew the contract and Vazquez was ready to quit the job, hence, both parties joined hands for the last time in good mood and ended a three year long relationship.
Failing to clinch their maiden title in 2011, it was becoming increasingly frustrating for the board to accept the fact that Argentina lost yet another Davis Cup final. They have qualified for the final for the record four times
in 1981, 2006, 2008 and 2011 but they have never been able to register a positive output.
Their progressive improvement was not enough to impress the Argentine’s Tennis Federation as Argentina made it to the quarterfinals in 2009 but lost to the team of Czech Republic with a score of 2-3, than they managed to sneak
into the semi finals in 2010 but were completely outdone by the classy French squad with a cumulative score of 0-5. This year they were in the finals but the likes of Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco proved a bit too much to
handle at their home soil.
Talking about his differences with Nalbandian, Vazquez said, “I had differences with David and I still have them, but we learnt to get along. I didn't give him the place that he wanted it was no use to me that the whole team danced
to the rhythm of one player. I don't see him as a positive leader inside the team."
Earlier this month he had hinted his retirement from the post of captain after his team lost in the finals, he said, “It's something we've been talking about. They have every right (to make the change). There needs to be a lot
of reflection. In these three years, we overcame a lot of difficult times, of criticism, and we left Argentina in a good moment and with a good timetable for next year."
It opens up the post of Davis Cup captain for the Argentinean team and it will be interesting to see who steps up to take that post.
