Cricket was a sport of gentlemen, controversies few and far between, but with the emergence of Twenty20 Leagues and the technological revolution, there is much more at stake than ever before. In the first of its kind incident, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Christopher-Lance-Cairns-c50906, the former New
Zealand all-rounder won a liberal case against Lalith Modi, the former Indian Premier League Chairman.
In the United Kingdom’s first twitter case, Cairns pursued a libel case against Modi, against a tweet sent in January 2010, when the former Chairman of the IPL disclosed the reason for Cairn’s absence from the IPL auction, saying that his alleged involvement
in corrupt practices in the Indian Cricket League led to his ban. Cairns did not want his reputation as a cricketer to be tarnished and brought the matter to court, suing Modi.
Justice Bean, who was presiding over the case, in his closing remarks said that Modi had "singularly failed to provide any reliable evidence" that the former captain of the Chandigarh http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lions-c808 was involved in morally corrupt practices such as spot-fixing and
match-fixing.
The judge also backed the case by saying, "It is obvious that an allegation that a professional cricketer is a match-fixer goes to the core attributes of his personality and, if true, entirely destroys his reputation for integrity."
Modi did not take the decision well and in response to the verdict he said, "I have received the judgement and I am immediately considering an appeal with my legal team. It would therefore be inappropriate for me to comment any further at this time."
The judge was also unsatisfied by the evidence presented by Howard Beer, the former ICL anti-corruption officer and he was also the man in charge of the investigation. Justice Bean found http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Howard-c63371 Beer to be "partisan to the point of being unprofessional".
Modi at the moment has 28 days to settle the matter with Cairns and he has to pay all the legal charges, including a payment of Pound Sterling 400,000 right away. Modi allegedly spent a million pounds on the case and he has been granted the right to appeal.
