how much is the ticket for having an aftermarket exhaust? specifically in Virginia but any state would help just to give me a ballpark figure. Also, if i get a "fix-it" ticket can i just pay the fine anyway and keep my exhaust or do i HAVE to fix it?

  1. Depends on the state laws and the exhaust system. Most aftermarket systems are "Cat-back" and are pretty much DOT legal. Where people run into trouble are the "Ricer" cars with the bazooka style mufflers. Most of the guys that have them take out the removable silencer baffles and all to often claim that it's "Legal". At least to me that is.

Normally if you get a repair order you have 5 days to correct the problem. Then a citation would be issued. Some Depts. will want to inspect it but some won't.

  2. In Ma. if you get a ticket for loud exhaust, you have 7 days to get it fixed and then afterv you get it fixed you have to take the car or whatever to the R.M.V. and they will inspect it to make sure you have done the correct repairs.

  3. you'll first likely get a warning and say, 2 weeks (or so) to fix it. if it's not repaired and you get pulled over again, you will be given a ticket. if the tickets keep up, you could end up w/your car being towed away, at your expense and be given a court date.... judges don't look too highly on people when they repeatedly disobey the laws.

just fix the problem to avoid playing ticket tag.

  4. in Louisiana, if you fail to fx it, next time you are stopped, the vehicle is towed.

  5. you have to fix your exhaust unless you want to keep getting more tickets! I used to get tickets all the time for my loud exhaust when I was younger. Here at NJ its about 50 bucks. Im a police officer now so I know about these rules. However, this is NJ so it varies state to state.
