Modi’s lawyer again demands a reconstituted Disciplinary Committee
Mehmood Abdi, lawyer of suspended IPL Chairman Lalit Modi, has once again demanded a reconstituted Disciplinary Committee investigating allegations of financial irregularities against his client during the third
season of the highly lucrative Indian Premier League.
Referring to the BCCI’s by-laws, Modi’s legal counsel said that the Cricket Board, in its Annual General Meeting held on the 29th of September, revised the composition of its various committees except
for the probe committee looking into Modi’s case. Abdi further added that as the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) did not form a fresh probe committee, “therefore, there is no disciplinary committee in existence. There was no reconstitution, re-nomination
or formation of the disciplinary body" added Modi’s counsel.
According to Abdi, the issue has been raised with BCCI’s Vice-President Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Arun Jaitley, the President of MPCA (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Madhya-Pradesh-c809 Cricket Association) – both part of the three-member disciplinary
committee – and they have passed the message on to the BCCI with a reply expected by Tuesday. Besides Jaitley and Scindia, the Disciplinary Committee also includes the new IPL chairman Chirayu Amin, who is heading the panel.
Modi has sought recusal of Amin and Jaitley from the committee claiming that the two are likely to be biased against him. His appeal to stay the proceedings of the BCCI-appointed probe panel was dismissed
by the Bombay High Court on the 15th of July this year. Modi then approached the Supreme Court of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 challenging the judgment of the Bombay High Court.
Mehmood Abdi was hopeful that sooner or later his client will be cleared of all the charges leveled against him “by” as he said “some people with vested interest”. Modi’s lawyer was adamant that his client is fully
cooperating with the investigation agencies and the Indian board and there is no ‘laxity’ on his (Modi’s) part.
Abdi also insisted that his client is not an absconder and is not hiding anything and the only reason behind his stay in London is the imminent threat to his life. "He is not a fugitive as he has declared his whereabouts,"
maintained Abdi.
The BCCI suspended Modi from the IPL Chairmanship soon after the conclusion of the third season of the Twenty20 league in April, claiming he was involved in some financial irregularities in the bidding process
of the franchises for the league. Besides financial irregularities, he has also been charged with under-pricing the media rights of the league, supposedly conspiring to start a parallel IPL in England.
