Modun to represent Godolphin in the Melbourne Cup
Participation of So You Think at the Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe has made crowds anticipative and more anxious about the race, similarly Sir Michael Stoute’s Modun at the Melbourne Cup has taken the race to an altogether different level.
The colt has however been bought away from Sir Michael Stoute’s stables by Godolphin so that he can run the Melbourne.
This race that has been held since 1861 is an undisputed richest and most prestigious ‘two mile’ handicap in the world which is held on the first Tuesday in November each year for thoroughbreds aged three and older.
Last year the Cup was won by Americain under Gerald Mosse with Alain de Royer Dupre. This year it would be the 151st edition of the race with one of the winning possibilities being Godolphin’s Modun.
On 3rd September, Modun won the Kempton title at Betfred September Stakes where he shot through the track with quite an impressive performance.
He got on with chasing the three in lead, then edged right and used his tactics for entering the final second furlong, finally gearing up to lead in the final furlong and then kept the pace intact till the finish line.
He was being ridden by Shane Kelly. Bronze Cannon was the runner-up of the race and William Haggas’s Harris Tweed shot third in line through the wire. The field was set up for the show of seven talented horses.
Earlier in August this year, Modun participated in the Betfred Ebor but only stood fourth. His records are not exactly consistent but Godolphin wants to put him on test for the Melbourne Cup primarily keeping the recent achievement in mind.
''Modun has joined our operation to run in the Melbourne Cup,'' he told Britain's
Racing Post. ''He might run again before then but his main target is Australia and then he will be campaigned in Dubai next spring”.
It is expected that among him would be either or both of his stable mates Cavalryman and Lost In The Moment for the Melbourne.
His participation in a race after the Melbourne Cup is not definite so this one might as well be his last chance to post a winning for this season over which he and his connections should consider seriously.
Buying of Modun from Sir Michael Stoute was for this particular race, even if only initially but the results here would really impact the way the future plans for Modun will be laid out.
