Mohamed Sissoko denies rejecting approaches by Mali coach
Juventus midfielder Mohamed Sissoko has denied rumour that he snubbed approaches from coach Alain Giresse, who took over Mali's national team after this year's African Cup of Nations.
Giresse, a retired French international, has said he has been unable to reach the midfielder despite repeated attempts.
But Sissoko, who has made 26 appearances for Mali since his debut in 2004, denied that he has snubbed Giresse's approaches, saying that he could always be reached if the manager wishes to talk.
"I've never been contacted by either coach Alain Giresse or officials of the Mali Football Federation. I've never had a conversation with them," the 25-year-old told French daily
L'Independant.
"Their arguments do not hold water. My phone number is known to everyone. The evidence is that you’re able talk to me on my mobile."
Trophyless at Juventus
Sissoko, who played for Valencia and Liverpool before joining Juventus in January 2008, has often been hailed as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe.
Having won several titles in Spain and in England, the Malian is still looking to win a trophy with Juventus.
In 2004, Sissoko decided to represent Mali's national team despite being eligible to play for France. The French-born player said his decision reflected his commitment to Mali, which has yet to fade.
"If I decided to wear Mali’s jersey, it is because I love this country. Otherwise, I was contacted by the French national team."
Sissoko added that he will wait until the end of 2010 to decide whether he is fit enough to play international football.
"I'm not saying I'll no longer play with the national team, I only want to get my club form first. I'll be able to decide whether I'm fit enough by end of the year. In national team, you have to be in top form to be competitive."
