Mohammad Sami gets fined under disciplinary charges
Pakistan’s cricket players just cannot get enough of being in the news for all the wrong reasons. Just two days ago, Pakistan’s fast bowler Mohammad Sami allegedly found himself caught up in a drunken brawl outside a hotel in Rawalpindi.
Reports suggested that Sami who captains a domestic cricket team, Karachi Blues, was staying in a hotel in Rawalpindi as his team was taking part in the ongoing prestigious domestic cricket event, Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. He allegedly got involved into a fight
outside the hotel with a fellow player as witnesses said that he was drunk and damaged some hotel furniture.
The situation became worse as Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) President Siraj Bukhari got notified of the incident and he demanded a report of the alleged incident late Thursday.
Sami, who was staying at Grace Hotel in Rawalpindi, was asked to be present in a disciplinary hearing on Friday, a local newspaper reported.
Bukhari was quoted in the newspaper saying that “We don’t know the proper details of the incident and we will only decide on action after getting both sides of the story.”
There were conflicting reports suggesting that the hotel management has also asked for compensation for the damaged furniture.
The 29-year-old pacer literally came up to the blows with fellow bowler, off spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Atif-Maqbool-c46639 on the pitch as they exchanged some hard hitting words. They carried the grudge to the team hotel where the alleged brawl took place.
However, Sami denied the claims saying he had a misunderstanding with the player but “it is not true” that he was drunk.
Yet, all was not good for Sami as the KCCA’s disciplinary committee found Sami guilty in the incident and he was slammed with a two-match fine.
The KCCA President said, “We have found no evidence that Sami was involved in a brawl after getting drunk. He has been fined for violating the code for players despite being the captain of the Karachi team.”
Maqbool did not escape from the punishment as he was handed over a one-match fee fine as well as the team manager and coach were also fined as they failed to control the players.
Sami conceded that he failed to set an example for his team, as being a captain it was wrong for him to be involved in a fight, however he said that he was clearly upset due to reports that he was drunk.
“Thankfully that is now clear,” the pacer concluded.
Sami who has been out of the national squad due to his injuries and form issues is looking for a comeback in the 30 man preliminary squad for the World Cup 2011 that is expected to be announced by the end of this month.
