Pakistani Test cricketer, Mohammad Yousuf, who is keen to make his international return, and took part in fitness sessions held at National Cricket Academy Lahore, has been informed by the national selectors to play domestic cricket prior to his selection
in the national team.
According to the chief selector http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Iqbal-Qasim-c76980, the criteria for all the players is simple – apart from undergoing various fitness programmes, they also need to participate in all the domestic events in order to be considered for
selection.
“Yousuf has appeared in the fitness tests and that is good. It is a good sign that he is practicing again but our criteria is clear, players even if they are seniors must appear in domestic cricket matches to be considered for selection," told Iqbal Qasim,
chief selector.
The 37-year-old right handed batsman has not appeared in any international game after being snubbed from the national team in November 2010. He has also played little domestic cricket after that, with his last appearance coming in June 2011.
However, his chances of making a comeback were boosted after his involvement in a training session, headed by the new Men in Green Head Coach, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Davenell-Frederick-Whatmore-c52571. The 58-year-old mentor, along with fielding coach, Julien Fountain, aims to evaluate the fitness
levels of the senior players ahead of the announcement of the squad for their next assignment against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, starting on June 1, 2012.
The aging player however, has revealed that he is practicing twice a day, and is hopeful of making a return to the team, in a bid to end his career on a high.
“I have tried to maintain my fitness even while I was not playing cricket. I have given my fitness test. Now the selectors and board have to let me know about the results and decide what to do," said Yousaf.
The squad for Sri Lanka tour will be announced in the first week of May, while the board has yet to finalize the list of players who will be awarded central contracts, which remain due since January 1st, 2012.
