Mohammed Gharib conducting table tennis teaching and developing programme at Barbados
Mohammed Gharib is currently in the Caribbean Island of Barbados, as he is conducting a special programme on teaching and developing table tennis in the island from March 25 to July 4
Gharib is an Egyptian national and is conducting a National Sports Structure Course on table tennis in the Barbados. The course is organized by the collaboration of International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Hopes Development Programme and the Olympic
Solidarity.
Mohammed is now a day’s carrying out an ITTF Level One course which started on May 16 and will be concluding tomorrow. There are 20 teachers from different schools of the region, who have enrolled for the training course.
Gharib is also collaborating with the Chair of the Barbados Paralympic Federation, Wesley Worrell in order to organise events for the Paralympics athletes.
During his four months stay he will be focusing on the children from the local schools. Mohammed is working closely with the Barbados Table Tennis Association (BTTA) and the Barbados National Sports Council in order to promote the sport in the country.
The students from the primary and secondary schools of Barbados will be taking part in different table tennis events. The first stage of the programme was held on May 12. The concluding rounds will be held on June 14. The semi-finals and finals for both
primary and secondary school children will be played on June 16.
All the matches will be held at the Table Tennis Centre located at the Nursery Drive, in St. Michael.
There will a total of 21 teams, participating in the Hopes development event. The matches will be played between 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. as the BTTA and the ITTF have joined forces to arrange the cost of the championship.
The schools that are participating in the Championship are:
Primary: St. Matthews, St.Giles, St. Winifreds, West Terrace, St. Christopher, Sharon, Roman Catholic, Wesley Hall, Ignatius Byer, St. Joseph, St. Gabriel's, Eagle Hall
Secondary: St Michael's, Foundation, Queen's College, St. Leonard's, Parkinson, Learning Center, Ann Hill, Ellerslie, Combermere
Table tennis is not considered as a major sports in the World. The ITTF is striving hard to promote the sport on a global level. The current course is also a part of the Hopes Development programme of the ITTF. There are various courses and tournaments currently
in progress in different parts of the world. In April, a Hopes Development programme was held in Sri-Lanka. Level one referee training course was held at United States of America in March.
The current four months development course in Barbados will play a key role in the development of the young players.
