Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif determined to perform well in the 2011 World Badminton Championships
Malaysia’s Men’s Doubles player, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, is determined to perform well in the 2011 World Badminton Championships, which will take place at the Wembley Arena in London, England, from August 8 to 14.
Zakry vows to get the best possible results in the mega event with his partner Hoon Thien How, which will justify their selection in place of Tan Bin Shen – Gan Teik Chai. The pair are given a chance to participate in the Championship due to their consistent
performances in international events in the last six months.
Zakry – Hoon are currently ranked World Number 27 and could not qualify for the World Championships on merit. However, the Badminton Association of Malaysia dropped the World Number 17 pair of Tan Bin – Gan Teik and selected Zakry – Hoon to represent Malaysia
in the Championship.
While talking about his surprising selection, Zakry said, “It was really a big surprise for me when I found out that Hoon and I have been selected for the world meet. I had already given up hope and was pondering over my future plans with Thien How.”
He further added that the coach, Rexy Mainaky, confirmed their selection for the World Championships. Zakry is expecting that his pair will not prove their selection wrong by playing well in the tournament.
While talking about his previous experiences of World Championships, Zakry said, “I competed twice with Fairuzizuan (2007 in Kuala Lumpur and 2009 in Hyderabad) and we did well in India. This will be my first outing in the championships with Thien How and
we hope to go as far as possible.”
Both shuttlers are determined to utilize this opportunity and do their best in the mega event, where all top pairs from China, Korea, Indonesia and Denmark will compete to win the Men’s Doubles title. Zakry said that they are expected to meet the seed opponents
in the early rounds of the Championship but they are ready to compete against them.
