Mohit Kamat trounces Saber Afif to surge into main round of Spanish Open 2012
Men’s Singles campaigner Mohit Kamat of India overpowered Saber Afif in qualifying round and made his cut into main draw of Spanish Open on May 17, 2012.
The inexperienced but talented shuttler took 51 minutes to seal the victory with final results of 14-21, 21-14 and 21-15.
Though, Mohit Kamat was bit scratchy in the start but he played positive badminton to save his honour while the opposing shuttler frittered away his effort of first set which cost him a ticket to main event.
Saber Afif, who was ranked at fifth place in qualifiers, completely dominated in opening game of the match. He exhibited prime skills in court and kept his challenger busy in just returning his masterly crafted strokes.
In first half, the Dutch campaigner gained early advantage by clinching some consecutive points. He maintained his upper hand until mid-game break and placed a decent margin of 11 points.
Later part of the game saw Mohit making swift progress to level the score but Saber proved that his defence is as good as his attack.
He first reinstated his dominance with some continuous rallies and then magnified the impact by turning his small lead into a formidable total.
Saber swept the board with a significant margin of 21-14.
However, he could not relish the benefits of first set win as the Indian shuttler showed strong character after finding himself one down.
Mohit, who was underdog earlier in this tournament, managed to stay firm against his rival’s intensive game-play.
Though, he looked bit confuse in the start but he gained confidence with some fruitful rallies and never looked back.
At the end of first half, both were standing close in score position but the Indian lad accelerated his pace immediately after the interval and wrapped second set with a remarkable total of 21-14.
The decider turned consequential after this revised status and both contenders strived hard to avoid a woeful exit.
They were locked in tense situation until one-minute break but young Mohit struck hard in final stage of the game and ended this tussle with a six-point lead in final result of 21-15.
