Mojang’s Scrolls goes Alpha – Video Games Update
Mojang Specifications, the video game studio created by Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, has announced today that the upcoming strategy game Scrolls has gone alpha and the studio will be sending out access codes.
Notch, the creator of Minecraft, announced the next game by Mojang, Scrolls, on March 2, 2012. Scrolls will be a strategy game with trading card game mechanics and will offer single-player and multi-player modes.
This game sparked a legal battle between Mojang and Bethesda when Bethesda, the creators of the Elder Scrolls games, made a claim against the name ‘Scrolls’, saying that it would ‘confuse’ players. Luckily, the issue was resolved when both parties came to
an agreement.
Mojang managing director, Carl Manneh, revealed the details of the settlement and stated, "We have settled the lawsuit over Scrolls and Mojang and Bethesda are friends again. To answer the big question - yes Scrolls is still going to be called Scrolls. To
answer the second question - we aren't going to keep the trademark. For us this was never about a trademark but being able to use Scrolls as the name of our game which we can.”
It seems that Mojang is using the same strategy which Notch used with Minecraft. He launched the alpha version of Minecraft and started getting fan feedback as he worked on the game, took 25 percent off the final price for beta access which meant that gamers
who were in the beta would get the game for free when it launched.
Minecraft turned into a phenomenon with over 6 million copies sold to date. This generated more than enough revenue for Notch to quit his day job and start his own game studio.
Fans lucky enough to get a Scrolls code will be able to test out the game in Alpha and if there is a positive response, Mojang will probably set 50 or 25 percent off the pre-purchase price if gamers buy when the game is in beta.
Mojang has stated that gamers will get to see the ‘Deck Building’ mode, where players will manage their scrolls and create decks for use in the other modes, a single-player and a multi-player mode. Mojang has also stated that fans shouldn’t worry if they
haven’t gotten a code yet as the developer has just sent a few at the moment and will be sending out more soon enough.
