Molar Mass, i am extremely confused! ?

C7H14O2

this means 7 carbon atoms, 14 hydrogen atoms, etc

my book has 7 carbon moles, 14 H moles, etc

my question is why:

7 moles (6.022 x 10^23 atoms) C = 7 atoms of C ?

C 7 moles

H 14 moles

O 2 moles

C7H14O2 <---- this is considered to be a 1 mole of C7H14O2

7 + 14 + 2 moles = 23 moles! shouldnt C7H14O2, be 23 moles and by the way i still dont understand why 7 moles C = 7 atoms C

  1. C7H14O2 is the molecular formula. it means there are 7 Carbon atoms, 14 Hydrogen atoms and 2 Oxygen atoms in ONE molecule. The moles is just a way to quantify the molecules into an amount that is measurable. it does NOT imply that 1 atom equals 1 mole.

1 mole is equal to 6.022 x 10^23 of ANYTHING. like a dozen is equal to 12 of anything. the word mole is not meant to imply anything about the molecule itself, it is just a word to describe a certain number of items. so it saying that a mole refers to the amount of molecules explains everything.

  2. i have no idea about the the c=7 thus 7 moles. actually i do i just can't verbalize it.

but u cant just add up the moles of all the particles that make the molecule. so 7+14+2 is indeed 23, but 1 mole of pear oil is composed of 7 carbons 12 hydrogens and 2 oxygens. your counting the moles of atoms, not the mole of a molecule and that's wrong.
