Question:

Mold Growing In Snake Cage?

by  |  earlier

I just noticed that there is a minor growth of mold on the grape driftwood that I purchased and placed in my snakes cage. What can I do to kill and prevent this mold? I checked and changed the bedding, there was no mold. My snake is still healthy and acting normally.

The mold is on an isolated spot on the wood. I read that bleach doesn't kill the mold that grows on wood, and that its dangerous to use bleach on things that go into my snakes cage.

  1. take it back to where you got it and complain! i wouldn't keep it as you never know what else is on there! good luck!

  2. You can scrub the driftwood with iodine free salt and then rinse it thoroughly

Allow the wood to dry completely (to avoid splitting) and bake it at 325-350 degrees F. for an hour.  It should dry out the wood, and kill the mold spores.

The wood in his enclosure should be cleaned and baked every few months, or whenever soiled, as part of the cleaning process for the snake's habitat.

Depending on the bedding you are using (wood chips, etc.), it should be baked before use, as well.

I hope this has been helpful.

  3. Cut out the moldy area entirely, leave none behind. Hopefully that'd work, but you might have to just throw it out.

The best way to prevent mold is to have your humidity fluctuate some throughout the day, or lower the humidity if its higher than necessary.

  4. been there done that is right but also check your humidity and make sure its not to high and try to ensure you dont have standing moisture under and areas that are constantly dark so that mold doesnt begin to grow
