Question:

Mold smell coming from kitchen drain, any ideas?

We moved into a house a few weeks ago and we have noticed a mold smell coming from our double-sink. (it goes away when we plug the sink)

The house was built in 1996. Is there a treatment available to get rid of this problem?

Thank you!

  1. Try cleaning your coffee maker with vinegar and then pour the hot vinegar down the drain.

  2. DO YOU HAVE A GARB.DISP.? POUR A LITTLE BLEACH DOWN THE DRAIN BOTH SIDES,THIS WILL HELP.YOU MAY HAVE A VENTING PROBLEM IN THE SEWER MAIN,IF IT PERSIST YOU MAY HAVE TO GET A PLUMBER TO TAKE ALOOK AT IT.

  3. do you have a disposal? if so, throw a couple orange skins down in there. run disposal along with hot water from sink.

if you dont have a disposal, use some draino (directions on bottle) then rinse WELL! a few days later, pour some hot bleachy water down the drain as well.

  4. i would say your best bet is to go to a home hardware or something and ask them about your problem. they have whole sections in the store dedicated to sinks....so they would def. be able to help you!

    good luck

p.s. if it is mold get ride of it quick....that stuff isnt good for you

  5. Valve the water off underneath the sink and remove and clean the p-trap.

This will most likely resolve the smell if the orange peel method doesn't work.Good luck.

  6. Slowly wash a box of baking soda down both drains. l have had to do ours that was a few times over the years. lts safe , wont clog the drain and cheap. start with that.

  7. pipe snakes

  8. Could be a blocked drain air vent. Look on the roof above the kitchen sink for the vent pipe. Can be blocked by insect nests, leaves or debris and often get bent over and crimped shut from snow sliding off the roof if you live in cooler climate.

  9. I pour baking soda down the drain, then pour white vinegar right on top, it bubble up and deodorizes the sink, see if that helps, it helped me!!

  10. does it have disposers and dishwasher? if so first run dishwasher full cycle with dish detergent(dishwasher), make sure water is flowing into disposer when cycle drains.  then while it drains run garbage disposer... after wards take rubber drain covers/gaskets out from drain and scrub the undersides( food waste always gets caught there)  put it back together and cut up a lemon and grind it in the disposer with plenty of running water.

  11. The smell of your sewage is probably coming back up the drain! There's water that is suppost to sit in the curved part of your drain that will block this smell. Run water to make sure this is happening. But your best bet if this doesn't work is PLUMBER! Good Luck!

  12. you should have a plumber come to check it out or you can be your own plumber :)

maybe you have a bad sewage problem that hasnt been fixed in a long time.
