Question:

Moles underground in the allotment > what to do ?

Hi Folks,

I have an issue with a family of moles occupying the allotment, and helping themselves to root veg.

Oh, live & let live I suppose, to some extent, but it has become a competition. Bob vs moles.

I have tried the plastic bottles on canes, to cause wind vibrations in their habitat, to no avail.

I have chucked repellant down the holes.

No good.

Any notions ?

Bob

  1. Hi Bob

I had same problem, what  did was to(encirle them) using jays fluid .They hate the smell of jayes fluid. So draw a trail of jayes ,around your plot and they should stay way.Best regards joe. Also sprinkle some jayes fluid on the holes you have at present.

  2. I put unlit firelighters down the runs as they hate the smell of the lighter fluid and they do last for quite a while.

I also set traps but they are very difficult to catch. If you use traps wear an old pair of gardening gloves when handling them or the mole will be able to smell you will have not hope of catching them. Set the trap in a run about 6 inches or so away from a mole hill.

Unfortunately you can only deter them for so long as they will generally come back, even if you trap some others will move into the area so resign yourself to viewing it as an ongoing battle.

  3. Set the traps

  4. In a blender put a cup of water and tablespoon of dish soap, like Dawn. Blend then while blending add a bottle of castor oil, slowly. You can then use this mixture with a dilution of 2 tablespoon (or stronger) to a gallon of water. Pour some down the mole holes and then close the hole with some dirt and pack it down. They do not like the smell of the castor oil.
