Molestation charges against Luke Pomersbach dropped – Cricket News Update
In a recent development, the molestation charges leveled against Aussie batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Pomersbach-c1856 (currently affiliated with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the ongoing Indian Premier League) have been dropped as both parties have reached an out-of-court
settlement.
Controversy erupted last week when US national Zohal Hameed alleged that the 27-year-old batsman had molested her at the Maurya Sheraton in Delhi, and violently attacked her fiancé when he attempted to restrain the cricketer.
Pomersbach was arrested and charged under sections 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 454 (Lurking house-trespass or house-breaking in order to commit offence punishable
with imprisonment), and 511 (Punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The left-hander was later granted bail by a http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Delhi-c780 court magistrate Navika Kumari, after no evidence against him was discovered. He was however, suspended from the RCB by owner Vijay Mallya until cleared of all charges.
Mallya’s son, Siddharth Mallya, spoke out in support of the cricketer on Twitter, but his tweets, which cast doubts on the character of the woman in question, prompted Hameed to issue him a legal notice, demanding that he apologise for his statements.
However, the complainant has recently decided to drop all charges against the accused, with both having agreed to settle the matter out of court, as confirmed by Hameed’s lawyer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rajneesh-Chopra-c83630.
Following the recent development, with Hameed’s lawyers intending to seek a withdrawal of the case at the Delhi High Court, Siddharth Mallya tweeted his relief.
“So glad that all charges have been dropped and Luke can return down under A FREE MAN!”
The controversy is one among a string of unsavory incidents which have marred the ongoing 5th edition of the IPL. Earlier this month, the tournament was hit with claims of under-the-table corruption, and spot-fixing, with 5 players suspended by
the BCCI following a sting operation carried out by television channel http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 TV.
Another recent incident involved the arrest of two players, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/WD-Parnell-c2787, at an unauthorised rave party which was raided by the police, further adding to the IPL’s growing notoriety.
