Question:

Mom and her health problems...?

My mother has severe blockage in her intestines...she blames it on having round worms even though several doctors have tested her in a variety of ways and found no evidence of the parasite. However, I think its just the way she lives her life. She sits outside at least 8 hours a day chain smoking and drinking coffee loaded with sugar. She smokes around 2 packs a day and drinks about 4 pots of coffee a day. She also never gets exercise. Could this possibly be causing her blockage? Thanks guys!

  1. If your mom is still able to sit outside or do every day things, she doesn't really have a severe blockage. Intestinal blockages are excruciatingly painful and life-threatening; people who have them scream and writhe in unbelieveable agony. I know this for a fact.

I've had severe blockages, and each time it has happened, I either spent hours in the emergency room or got admitted for immediate intestinal surgery where several feet of the intestines were removed.

If she has had abdominal surgery before, it's very possible that your mom has adhesions that bind and can kink the intestines, which can cause intermittent blockages. This happens to me rather frequently, and it requires the use of hefty pain-killers and the occasional trip to the emergency room for a CAT scan to see what is going on. Sustained intestinal blockages can cause rupture of the intestines, distributing fecal material throughout the inside of the abdomen, or it can disrupt the blood supply to the intestines, causing tissue death. Either one of those scenarios is life-threatening, the latter scenario usually causing death within 72 hours if not treated.

With the sugar, caffeine, and smoking, and little to no exercise, your mom's overall general health no doubt suffers. Excessive sugar consumption can cause overgrowth of bacteria in the intestines, leading to bloating, crampy-type feelings, and bad digestion. Exercise, especially walking, helps the intestines do their job.

Perhaps you can persuade your mom to accompany you in a daily walk. "Gee, mom, I feel like stretching my legs. Let's go for a walk." Even if it is a walk to go to the convenience store to buy cigarettes, this is worthwhile.

You could volunteer to fix her the coffee. If she takes her coffee with, say, 6 teaspoons of sugar, you make it with 5-3/4 teaspoons of sugar for the first week. The second week, cut it back to 5-1/2; the third week, cut it back to 5-1/4, and so on. By doing it little by little, she won't really notice much of a difference. After a while, the sugar will be cut way back. Your mom will feel much better physically and emotionally with the sugar cut back. If she feels better emotionally, she won't smoke as much either.

Try not to nag her about what's she's doing or not doing. That doesn't work and just causes more friction and anxiety, which will lead to more sugar intake and more smoking. Treat her with more love and kindness, and I think she will respond. Good luck with your mom.

  2. your mother has serious problems

  3. Yeah coffee is a strong water absorber well not literally but it does concentrate ur blood and the f***s( hence causing constipation etc). Both tobacco and coffee have thousands of chemicals in them that are toxic and this may be their side effect although recent research says coffee is good for heart problems !

  4. Severe blockage in the colon is a serious matter.  Did the Dr tell her after a colonoscopy?  You have to find out if this is a bowel obstruction that needs to be attended to or just constipation.  With a blockage, there's poor circulation to the portion of that colon which can become ischemic.  It would open to more problems .

The following can cause constipation.  as they are dehydrating.  High sugar, caffeine and non-nutritional drinks – alcohol, coffee, colas and fruit juice (since the fiber has been removed) Howeve, drinking coffee even at 4 pots/day do not cause a bowel obstruction.  You have to convince her to see a doctor and address this problem.
