Question:

Mom favoring football playing brother?

So younger brother recently went out for football which is great i guess but now my mom is giving him all of this attention and he's getting out of doing chores before practice and my mom centers her work schedule around his practices. It wouldn't bother me that much but not even a year ago I asked my mom if I could take dance lessons and she just complained about the cost of costumes and getting me to the lessons. Now I'm taking my anger out on my brother and he hasn't even done anything wrong. What should I do?

  1. Lets look at it in a different way.  Your mom is in the "first grade" of being a parent to teens.   She made a mistake on your dance class or failed to explain the costs about which she expressed concern.  No one is perfect.   Being just human, your mom may deep down like sports over artistic expression like dance.   Rather than make a big issue out of it via an argument, you could buy a couple of dance magazines and lay them around the room to attract your mom's attention and maybe see will reconsider her year old decision as being not the best she might have done.   In between time, please give your little brother a break.  The "baby" of the family always get favored kid status.  It has been that way since forever.  Try to be happy for your brother.  He could get injured and you will right there worried about him.  Yes?

  2. talk to your mom about it.

  3. Talk to your mom.  Know however how much stress she is under raising you guys.  Maybe she is hoping for a scholarship for college for him.  Don't confront her, just tell her how you feel.
