Both.   Though Mom grew up in a convent run by the Spanish and always used "c" instead of "k" in how she writes letters, e.g.,  "cacaba caba acong cumapit sa calesa" (with a loudly throbbing heart I held on to the carriage).  And she could curse in that most colorful language, too.  Specially when I did something wrong again, and she's lookin' for me with that great big stick.
