I am 26 and my mom wont let me borrow her car for anything. I once asked could i run to town to pick something up at burger king bc there was no food in the house(NONE except onions) and she sleeps until 3pm. She said no because she was afraid something would happen.I'm not even allowed to take the car to go down the street. I have no idea how to drive on the interstate because she refuses to teach me bc its "too dangerous". She claims i can drive the car when i find a job until i can get my own car. I know its her car and its her right not to allow me to drive it for whatever crazy reasons she has but my worry is how is that gonna work when i she wont even let me go to Wendy's or walmart that's 5 min away. Doesn't she know that since we live in a small rural town i may have to go 30 mins away to go to work. What is my moms issue?

  1. I think that at 26 and living in a rural area, you need to have use of a car. Point out that you can't get a job unless you pick up job applications and go to interviews. She will either have to drive you to these places or let you borrow her car.

Is she afraid because of a previous accident?  Point out that accidents are usually random events that don't repeat themselves (unless you're a bad driver).

Do you have a friend that can take you out on the freeway in his/her car?  Maybe if you practice with someone else, and that person reassures your mom, she will let you try using her car.

Is it a question of insurance cost?   Offer to pay for your own insurance.

You could also check into car loans or a lease for yourself. If you don't have enough income to qualify, ask your mom to co-sign, just until you can manage the payments on your own.

Just some ideas.  Hope they help.

  2. you should have your own car my brother has his since he was 17

  3. if wal mart's only 5 miles away, get a job there and ride a bike or jog. it's your mom's car that she probably worked hard to buy, and you can do the same. i really have no sympathy for you.

  4. It really sucks growing up with a mom who is so anal. It was the same thing for me but my husband/ boyfriend at the time taught me how to drive and took me back and forth to work. I really don't know what to tell you its a hard situation. Tell you mom you need to go to town job hunting for interview and see what she says. Chances are she is trying to shelter you so you don't move out. But god your 26.
