Mominul Haque called up as Shakib’s replacement – Cricket News Update
Bangladesh have called up uncapped middle-order batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760, starting in Khulna on Friday.
Experienced all-rounder Shakib has been ruled out of the opening fixtures due to a shin injury, which he had sustained during Bangladesh’s second innings in the lost second Test, in Khulna last week.
Mominul earned the maiden national call-up after scoring consistently in both List A and first class cricket over the last year and a half. To date he has played 19 four-day matches scoring 895 runs, including three centuries and four fifties, at an average exceeding 30. Two of his three tons have come in this year’s National Cricket League (NCL), where he is playing for Chittagong, including one against Rajshahi Division earlier this month.
The talented 21-year-old left-hander scored 43 and 45 for the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI against West Indies and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 respectively this week.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board chief selector, Akram Khan, said that though the rookie left-hander had been consistently performing well over the last year and a half, it would be wise not to have too many expectations from him.
"The team management had asked for a batsman to replace Shakib for the first two ODIs, so we picked Mominul," said chief selector http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Akram-Khan-c42577 while speaking to media reporters after naming Haque as veteran Shakib’s reinforcement.
"He has been batting well for the last one and a half years, but I feel it will be wise not to have too many expectations of him because he is new. We will only want him to do things that a batsman does."
"We picked him from among the form batsman. He has been consistent for the A team, scoring runs in the West Indies, and also has runs in first-class cricket at home," he added further.
The first two One Day Internationals of the five-match series will be played in Khulna on November 30 and December 2 respectively.
