Mommys...i need an opinion?

ok, long story short, my baby is 10 weeks, and at 3 weeks she was diagnosed with suspected meningitis as they were not able to grow anything from her spinal tap. Well, what rose concern in me then was her sleeping a lot and not eating much, fussy when up.......

well, seeing as it was SUSPECTED meningitis..they were not 100% sure...just PRETTY sure! (long story to how they were not able to find out for sure)

anyways....today she has not ate but 4 times, which she normally is on a very good schedule, and she's a very happy baby....not today..and yesterday she was extra fussy....I'm uncomfortable with the fact that she has only ate 4 times, and is SLEEPING....We've only changed her 4 times today....first question...

Is this cause enough for concern for dehydration? (she's a very good night sleeper, too. So if I wait til morning...if she sleeps most of the night...will she be ok?)

second....has anyone had a baby who would get "spurts" like this...where she was sick..or anything, little eating, crying, unhappy..LOTS of sleeping.

And by lots, I mean she has been awake maybe a total of 2 hours ALL day...(not at once..thats ALL DAY added up)

I dont want to over react and rush her to the ER if not needed....She has a wonderful dr that i will call and talk to tomorrow, even tho its a holiday if she is still acting like this...but for the night...

what are you opinions?

  1. Ok for ur first question, my daughter did the same a ten weeks, as she does now as a 4 month old. Depends, are u nurding or bottle feeding? I nurse, so i find she only ate 4 times a day, ate for 5 mins or less on 1 breast at a time, was extremely fussy when awake. sleeps well at night but NOT during naps. She had about 4 wet sdiapers a day, give or take.  She is also a happy baby. If shes gaining and giving u diapers, shes getting as much a she needs. As for dehydration, not always but the open part on top of her head(forget the name now) if its suck in, thats one sign of it. But if shes giving u diapers shes completely fine., its perfectly normal for a baby to sleep through the night at this age, shell be fine till moring.

Second question...Yep, my little one got spurts, infact she gets them often. sometimes she will nurse all day and have more naps, others shes awake wants to play and hardly wants to eat. sleeping and eating promote growth. alot of babies sleep alot at that age.

You dont need to rush to the ER, chances are shes got her apt for her first needles, write a list of ur concerns and how shes different. and ask ur doctor about it.

About the binki, mine did the same, id have countless fight to try and feed her and she push of the breat once its in her mouth and cries. i give her the suckie and thats what she wanted. Also my daugher started teething at this age, so thats why she was l a lil more fussy and such

I hope that helped u and good luck :)

  2. well, it sounds like a growth spurt, and the reason why she's not eating much is cause she's too busy sleeping. As long as she's wetting and dirtying her diapers and gaining weight she sounds fine to me. As for now, I'd say make sure she doesnt go more than 4 hours in between feedings and if she does, feed her.

  3. Hi, Firstly i just want to say, your instinct is the best, so if you think it is cause for concern then you take your little girl to the doctor.

I am a survivor of meningitis-septicaemia, (are more aggressive form, because an early stage was not diagnosed)

Please look out for any kind of rash on her skin, stiff joints, and flu like symptoms. If you see any of these signs it is absolutely imperative that you take your daughter straight to the ER.

If it is not meningitis then all the better. If her little body is fighting off a bug or virus it can make them sleep lots. If she is de hydrated then she will have decreased amount of wet nappies and the urine (if any) will smell very concentrated. If she doesn't wee at all, give your doctor a call and see what he thinks.

good luck i hope all will be well with your daughter

  4. I am thinking she is going through a growth spurt.  My son will sleep more for a couple days then be fine for a while.

She could have been exposed to a bug.  Her body could be fighting off a virus.  Her body could be busy fighting it off, but is doing such a good job she doesn't really show symptoms.

  5. If not a growth spurt, I might also suspect teething too.  I know it's early but from a mother with early teethers, let me tell you it is very possible.  They get fussy and irritable, they don't eat much but love to just nibble and suck on things and sleep like crazy after being fussy and over-doing themselves.  As long as you offer her food periodically, she's not going to starve.  If you're concerned about dehydration and she won't drink anything, I used to use a straw or medicine feeder to get my little guys to drink things down in small amounts.  Maybe a little bit of a taste of something will get her going.
