Question:

Moms, is your baby a piggy piggy? A question on self feeding...?

A serious question for once...

Can you over feed a self feeder?

My 8 1/2 month old will shovel in the solids if I let him. He is now off spoon feeding completely because he wants to feed himself. So we have been putting food on his tray and letting him feed himself. Over the past week he has been grabbing food by the handful and trying to shovel it all into his mouth at once. We had to start putting small amounts on his tray (2-3 pieces of food) because he was gagging otherwise. I have tried giving him whole pieces of food to let him nibble on, but he would try to get the whole thing into his mouth.

Am I alone here?

Does anyone else have a piggy baby?

  1. My daughter is 8 months old and does this.  She's doing a lot better though because I'll sit there and only let her grab one thing at a time.  But her big thing was putting a handful of cheerios in her mouth, grab another and stuff them in.  My daughter did pretty well after we taught her not to grab handfuls, maybe try that.

  2. my 10 month old has been on all table food since 7 months.  he shovels it in too!  The doctor said give him what he wants that he cant overeat.  Just in the last week he has started leaving some on the tray so maybe its slowing down.  He will eat a whole plate of food and i don't know where he puts it.  he's 30 inches tall and 18 1/2 lbs so he's very thin.  He's my little eater!  Also, doc said if he doesn't take his formula its fine since he eats so well.

  3. I've seen folks go right down every answer and do thumbsdowns all the way... ridiculous.

Anyway, my hubby's first clear word was "banana" (nana) and his mom gave him one and he tried to shove the whole thing in at once.  o_O  So you're not alone.  My hubby was a piggy baby.

His daughter on the other hand doesn't even need a bib most of the time since she's so careful...

  4. Yup.  I have to only put a couple of pieces of whatever on Johnny's tray or he will have a mouthful of food and either choke or start coughing, which means he spews food all over me, the chair and the kitchen floor.  It's great.  LOL

  5. It sound like you are talking about my 17 month old daughter. My daughter was also just on table food by 9 months, and now she eats more then a man lol and she is still tiny. Babies and Toddlers burn many calories, they can't overeat (yet).

My daughter will shovel all the food she can in her mouth and say MMMM. It's cute but she'll end up spitting half of it out, what a mess dinner time is!

  6. Yep!! Ian will shovel food non stop into his mouth and the scream for more..we've started putting 1/2 a jar or 1/2 a serving onto his tray and we sit and watch him shovel away like he's starved and then we give him the other 1/2 of his serving. My husband and I sat and watched him eat last night and had to try so hard not to giggle...one chunk after another kept going into his mouth with no breaks!!! He's definately a little piggy! And...all spoon feeding is out the window at our house...he absolutely will not let someone spoon feed him anymore...which I guess is a good thing now that he's feeding himself.

  7. lol... my boy is in the same position as your baby.He is 11 months old now but he stills try to eat a handful of food at once, plus he smashes all the food I give him and it all ends on the floor :( and he just likes doing this lol I think this is how they "experiment" I gues we'll just have to wait and just supervise them.Good luck!
