  1. They read every night before they go to bed.

Our community has programs that meet at the parks and do projects with the children.

Up until this year they had summer school that any child could sign up for. Due to budget cuts... only students that need it can go.

  2. Take them to the library weekly and make it fun. Get ice cream on the way home. Have them tell you about the books they have read afterward. Take them to a museum or the zoo. Anything can be educational if you make the most if it.

  3. I dont summer is for fun and the beach and nature hikes ..not academics

  4. Let them PLAY!!!!!!!!!!  That's a huge part of children learning.

  5. go to the library and pick 2 books and have them read them 2 you.

Get a work book for the grade that they are gonna be in and sit down with them and work on it for 20 min. a day.

  6. my mom(well, step mom, but their mom) enrolled my 9 and 13 yr old sisters into a little summer learning camp three times a week from8:30 to 12 at sylvan learning center. i don't know if they have one where you live, but even a place sort of like that. just ask around to all your local library's and learning centers for different programs they have to offer

  7. We read -- a lot.  We read out loud to the kids, the kids read to themselves, and they read to each other.  The kids who are old enough to write keep journals over the summer and write the occasional story or poem.  We play games like Boggle, Scrabble, Mastermind, chess, cards, etc.  We do tangrams and puzzles and treasure hunts with tricky clues.  We go on nature walks.  We have a couple vacations to new places, seeing new things (museums, parks, historical sites, zoos, etc.)

But honestly my kids, like most kids, are always in the proces of learning and thriving intellectually.  It doesn't take more than a conversation, and they are often to be found initiating their own learning about something.  Yesterday my 7-year-old was asking me about who invents words and where they come from.  (The next book I'm going to recommend to him is Frindle!) If only we adults were so curious.

  8. My kids are still in school...they go to year round school and won't be out until July 3 and go back on August 4.  I use a new concept called READING.  My kids have to read at least two books during their time off and write an essay on their opinion of the book, a brief history of the author of the book.  Why they chose the book, if they have read anything else by that author and if they would recommend it.  This includes my 5 year old.
