Moms and Dads. Can you answer this question?

Next weekend we're having my daughter's 5th birthday party at a local park. We are going to have a mini-Olympics-style party with races and games. The large open grass spaces we'll be spray-painting (with washable paint) the various "fields of play".

So far, we're planning relay races like baton passing and spoon w/egg, pillow case races (individually and with 3-legged), musical chairs (with dinner-style place mats instead of chairs) and a distance race around the outside edge of the park.

#1. I wonder if you have any additional suggestions for games/races?

#2. There is an existing playground and basketball court. How can I incorporate those into the games?

#3. Do you have any ideas of how to lay this all out?

#4. We're on a tight budget, and so have made "medals" from USA ribbon and red, white and blue circles of cut out of foamy sheets. How can I expand on this concept without going broke?

  1. You have more than enough games planned. You could play "around the world" with the basketball nets, but that will probably better best for the older children who will be in attendance.   Don't forget to plan for some "free play" time so that the kids could use the playground equipment.

  2. Why are you throwing such an elaborate birthday party for a 5th birthday?  It doesn't sound like you can afford it why didn't you just throw a small party that you could afford?

  3. Sounds like fun!

If you are going to have awards/ribbons for the winners, you may have to make sure that every child goes home a "medalist".

For basketball, my younger son played a game called "Knockout".  Or you could do relay races with dribbling a basketball.

They might like to do a "dance/gymnastic" performance.  Play music and let them do their somersaults and cartwheels.

    Great ideas!

  4. how about a hula hoop contest

    jump rope contest,
