Mona Barthel, Annika Beck move into final qualifying round – e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2011
German tennis player Mona Barthel continued her impressive form at the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open on Sunday, defeating Kristina Mladenovic and reaching the final round of qualifier for the first time in her career. The world number
142 displayed her best form against the Frenchwoman, reaching a 6-4, 7-5 victory in one hour and forty four minutes.
Barthel and Mladenovic both were neck-to-neck all the way in the opener, before a break of serve later on allowed the crafty and creative German to sneak it. However, the Russian player never gave in and converted a richly deserved
break of serve at the beginning of the second set to move into 5-0 lead. Unfortunately, the advantage was short-lived as the German player started to work the rallies on the other side of the net and became even more offensive for the Russian. However, serving
to stay in the match at 6-5, a forehand wide sealed Mladenovic’s fate and sent Barthel into the final.
Barthel wrapped up her straight sets victory with six aces and three double faults. Furthermore, she gained 64 percent of points on service, 47 percent of points on return and 55 percent of points in total. By contrast, Mladenovic
finished off the match with a whopping nine double-faults and six aces. She racked up 53 percent of points on her service, a poor 36 percent on return and 45 percent of points in total.
In another action-packed performance in the day, Annika Beck of Germany also entered the final round of qualifier after her Polish opponent Justyna Jegiolka surrendered while trailing 6-3, 6-1 on Sunday.
The 17-year-old Beck left her Polish opponent perplexed and demoralised, under an unrestrained assault of fire and brimstone. The German player was in total control of the match and displayed some high quality tennis with reliable
serving and fiery forehands.
If the first set saw Beck committing uncharacteristically unforced errors, the second set witnessed the precision of Beck as she made it really difficult for Jegiolka to win points. Beck consolidated the break of serve and race
to 4-0 in the deciding set. Finally, Beck clinched the final set with a 6-1 score and advanced to the final round of the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open.
Beck concluded her straight sets victory on account of 71 percent of points on her first serve, 52 percent of points on return and 58 percent of points in total. In comparison, Jegiolka lost her match with a difference of eighteen
points in total.
Emerging victorious, Barthel and Beck now move on ahead to face each other in the final qualifying round of the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open on Monday.
