Mona Barthel crushes Pauline Parmentier in the second round – Open GDF Suez 2012
World number 43, Mona Barthel of Germany, outclassed the 62nd ranked Pauline Parmentier in straight sets in the second round at the Open GDF Suez in Paris, France on Thursday. The German lost just three games in
the entire match, winning it 6-3, 6-0 in just an hour and nine minutes.
Barthel made a shaky start to the match and dropped her serve in the very first game to trail 0-1. However, the German kept her composure and broke back in the very next game, equalising the score at 1-1. Barthel broke the
Frenchwoman again in the sixth game to grab a 4-2 lead. Serving for the set at 5-3, Barthel saved a couple of break points and succeeded in holding her serve, clinching the set 6-3.
The 21-year-old hit one ace and 51 percent of the first serves in the opening set. The German converted 14 of the 18 first serves and nine of the 17 second serves points to claim victory. On the other hand, Parmentier had
a slightly better first serve percentage of 56 in the match. However, the French managed to win just 11 of the 19 first serves points in the opening set.
Barthel was almost flawless in the second set, as she did not lose even a single game to drive her opponent out of the contest. The German broke Parmentier three times, claiming six straight games and sealing the set 6-0.
The right-handed, Barthel, did not allow her opponent to win many service points in the second set. The 6ft 1in tall grabbed 90 percent of the first return points and 75 percent of the second service points. The German capitalised
on all the three break points she received in the second set.
Barthel is slated to face Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium in the quarterfinals. The Belgian ousted Christina McHale of USA in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.
Meanwhile, second seed Marion Bartoli remained on course for a title match show down with top seed Maria Sharapova, as she defeated Petra Martic of Croatia in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 in the second round.
Talking about her opponent in the next match, the Frenchwoman said, "She plays a lot like Petra with a lot of slice on her backhand, and the surface suits her too. But if I get into my rhythm I stand a good chance. For the
moment I'm delighted how things are going."
The local favourite, Bartoli, will meet Roberta Vinci of Italy in the quarterfinals. Vinci beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands of USA in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the second round.
