Mona Barthel devastates Jill Craybas in the opening round – BNP Paribas Open 2012
German tennis ace, Mona Barthel, stomped over the local wild card entrant, Jill Craybas, with a breadstick at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Wednesday. She penned down a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the world number 142 to advance into the second round at this hard
court tournament which is part of 2012 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour.
The 21-year-old showed top notch performance to crush Craybas in straight sets in their first meeting. She lost her serve once in the entire match and capitalised on five out of seven break chances to earn the spotlight at this WTA Premier Mandatory event
taking place in Indian Wells, United States.
Barthel stormed into the opening set and quickly plucked entire serves without facing any barrier. She broke the American’s serve twice and pulled out the opener with a breadstick. The German produced an amazing first serve share of 89 percent as compared
to Craybas’ 69 percent and superbly marked 15 out of 17 points on it.
Ranked 37th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Barthel carried her winning ways in the following set. The American failed to block the only breakpoint she came across but cashed in three out of four break opportunities to clinch the set with a 6-2 score
line. Barthel produced a lower first serve share in this set but spectacularly availed nine out of 11 points on it.
Next challenge for Barthel is the top seed, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who has not lost a single match this season. The German is looking forward to halt the world number one through tremendous agility from her box of tricks.
Meanwhile, Jamie Hampton, another wild card entrant, played her best tennis to progress at this event. The American kept her entire serves after saving the lone breakpoint she faced and broke Polona Hercog’s serve five times to formulate an assuring 6-0,
6-1 victory.
The 22-year-old needed 52 minutes to not only book a second round place but also took revenge for her loss against Hercog at the Barcelona WTA Premier event last year. She will next face the 12th seed, Jelena Jankovic, who received a first round
bye after being a seeded player at this event.
