Mona Barthel slaughters Chiara Scholl in opener – Nurnberger Gastein Ladies 2013
German star, Mona Barthel, breezed past the American challenger Chiara Scholl, with double bagels at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladiues 2013 on Monday. She jolted down a 6-0, 6-0 victory against the American to secure a spot in the
round of 16 at this WTA International level event taking place in Bad Gastein, Austria.
The top seed showed her class to crush Scholl in their second encounter. After ruling the match in 35 minutes, Barthel not only extended her lead in the head-to-head series by 2-0 against the 21-year-old but also inched closer
towards bagging the title.
The beaming German stated in a courtside interview after stealing the show,” I think one time I had another match that was also around 35 minutes too, but I lost a game in that! I still can't believe the score and it's the first
time I've won 60 60 at a WTA tournament, so that was really good for me. It’s sometimes difficult to play in the conditions here, as it's really high and the ball flies very fast through the air. It takes some getting used to and I'm pleased with how solid
I was today - I was returning well, serving well and hit quite a few aces."
Barthel high-spiritedly stormed into this match. She went on a six-game killing spree and pulled out the opener with a bagel.
The 23-year-old maintained her intensity in the following set. She continued firing massive forehands and subsequently sealed the set with a bagel.
Summing up the world number 31’s performance, Barthel clobbered a better first serve share of 59 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 39 per cent and impressively marked 16 out of 19 points on it.
Barthel was not the only one who sought her winning ways at this event. Arantxa Rus who recently tied the longest streak of losing consecutive match i.e. 17 matches found the right path. She fell to 17-match losing streak when
she bowed out to Olga Puchkova at the Wimbledon Championships few weeks ago.
Rus stunned seventh seeded Maria Teresa Torro-Flor with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 score line to reach the round of 16.
