Mona Barthel slays Urszula Radwanska to enter round two – 2013 Open GDF Suez 2013
German contestant, Mona Barthel, crushed the Polish challenger, Urszula Radwanska, with a bagel at the Open GDF Suez 2013 on Monday. She nudged up a 7-6(1), 6-0 victory against the Polish starlet to power into the second round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis
Association) Premier event taking place in Paris, France.
The 22-year-old displayed brilliant tennis to crush Radwanska in their second encounter. After earning the fame in one hour and 21 minutes, Barthel not only avenged her loss at the London Olympics last season but also levelled the head-to-head series by
1-1 against the Pole.
The beaming German was quoted in a post match press conference:
"It was a tough first set and she played really well. She was serving for the set at 6-5 and I think it was 30-0. At that stage I won a lot of points in a row; I started playing really good shots, stepping into the court, not making too many unforced errors
and playing well when I had to. I won the first set tie-break 7-1 and after that I was just more comfortable on the court and I won the second set quite easily."
Barthel made a sloppy entry at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin and suffered the first blow in the third game to trail at 1-2. She recovered in the very next game but lost her serve again, eventually falling at 2-4. Despite snatching her break back in the eighth
game, the German squandered her edge again in the second last game. However, she not only dragged the set to a tie-breaker but dominated in it, eventually sealing the opener with a 7-6(1) win.
Ranked 45th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Barthel went berserk in the following set. She unleashed flurry of groundstrokes and reeled off six games in a row. The German was never challenged with any breakpoint and cashed half of the six break chances
to pocket the bagel.
The German challenger produced an almost equal first serve share but impressively marked 31 out of 41 points on it.
Next in queue for Barthel is the winner of the match between fifth seeded Roberta Vinci and the Romanian star Simona Halep.
