Mona Barthel upsets Anabel Medina Garrigues in the second round – Hobart International 2012
German Mona Barthel pulled up a major upset by defeating the second seed Spanish, Anabel Medina Garrigues, in the second round encounter on Wednesday. Both players contested for just over an hour and 15 minutes before the
German world number 67 nailed down Garrigues in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to claim a berth in the quarter-finals of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event.
It was the first encounter between the two players and no one predicted such a monumental upset before the match. Sizeable crowd had gathered at the arena to witness this encounter; everyone was flabbergasted to observe such
an eye-startling performance from the Spanish underdog. Upsets always bring sheer entertainment to the crowd, as they run against the predicted script and surprising victories are always a pleasant present.
Qualifying for the main draw of the tournament through the qualifiers and then ousting the second seed performer in such a majestic manner is a massive achievement for the German. Barthel came with an aggressive mind set
and ruled the show with couple of serve breaks upfront. She held her first two serve games to take the scores to 4-0 in her favour.
Another successful serve game helped her to exert immense pressure on the second seed. She spared just one game for her opponent and rounded off the set in grand fashion. A roar of applause was heard for the German after
the end of the first set and everyone waited to see the reply of the second seed in the next set.
Spaniard started the proceedings in the second set with a successful serve game, so did her opponent. The first break was won by the underdog, as she surprised her opponent with couple of winners down the line. Both players
held their respective serves in the next three games before both players exchanged breaks to push the score to 5-3 in favour of the German.
Both players held their serves in the next two games and the victory for the German tennis ace, Barthel, was ensured. She moved into the quarter-final stage of the tournament; will lock horns with the winner of the match
between the two Aussies, fifth seed, Jarmila Gajdosova, and Anastasia Rodionova.
