Mona Barthel upsets Marion Bartoli to qualify for the quarter-final - Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2012
German booming starlet, Mona Barthel, squashed the seventh seed French, Marion Bartoli, to register yet another upset in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Friday. It was a cracking triumph for the 21-year-old German who dispatched
the visitor in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 and took full advantage of the wildcard allotted to her.
Previously, the 35th ranked German had defeated the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic, to register the first round upset and this comprehensive victory has definitely boosted her odds of winning the contest.
The match started pretty well for the German who broke serve in the fourth game to take a lead of 3-1 and consolidated it with a serve hold. Bartoli was totally out of form; missing the first serves and hitting the returns that
were miles away from the court bounds. It was a bad day for the French who was totally out of her socks making it pretty easy for the local to bag the triumph.
Nothing changed in the second set as well and the German gusted away to a lead of four games courtesy to two breakpoints on the trot. Bartoli was in no position to make a comeback and her morale was extremely low after committing
several unforced errors.
Barthel cruised to a lead of 5-1 and broke serve for the third time in the set to take finish off the match in just over an hour and 11 minutes. It was a mere one-sided contest that was led by the underdog performer. The visitor
was ousted in each aspect of the game; rather helped the local to win the contest with her continuous unforced errors.
Out of 103 points contested in the match, the German won 61 of them and bagged four of the allotted seven breakpoints; smashed seven aces and converted 85 percent of her first serves to her favour. It was a complete package that
registered such a resounding triumph against the French.
Talking to media representatives after the match, the German stated, “"It was one of the best matches of my life. I was immediately able to put her serve under pressure and it was enormously helpful being able to play in front
of such a fantastic crowd in this arena. Thank you to the fans. It's great to have my first win over a Top 10 player. It's something special."
Next up for the local is the top seed Belarusian, Victoria Azarenka.
