Although they are currently in Ligue 2, AS Monaco are bound to return to Ligue 1 eventually and will be one of the few clubs in France that would stare the Qatari straight in the eye
Last years, fans of AS Monaco and that of Paris Saint-Germain were smiling. Redeemed by large fortunes, two of the most famous clubs in Ligue 1 had a chance of becoming real powerhouses of French football.
Initially, it was the capital club that caught everyone’s eye. Signing the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Diego-c11058 Lugano was a signal of intent. However, later on, it was AS Monaco who came in the spotlight after the club was bought by Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian
tycoon who has now pledged 200 million euros to the club for the next couple of years.
Oligarchs and Sheikhs
With new financial resources and owners who want to stay at the clubs for long, Paris Saint-Germain and AS Monaco would start their own aristocratic rivalry soon.
Although both clubs have abundant resources to recruit some of the best players in the world, their financial models are poles apart and the two don’t house the same boat by any means. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 president, Vincent Labrune, claims that “Paris
creates an imbalance”.
However, the bosses of HAC and UCPF don’t agree with him as they believe that PSG will help improve the image of French football as the arrival of Qataris has made other investors consider Ligue 1 clubs as good investments for the future.
“PSG poses no difficulty. There is no safeguard to talk about. It is however, a simulation to find additional resources. Working on the stage, the image, tomorrow, there may be other investors who will come. The long-term goal is to have five or six top
clubs to bring us closer to the German model.”
Indeed, the German Bundesliga model is a very sound system of making sure that there is no hegemonic imbalance in the league. A few years back, it was Bayern Munich who were winning trophies for fun. Now, with the arrival of the likes of Borussia Dortmund,
Schalke 04 and others, it is not possible for Germany’s most successful team to have an easy ride all the time without any opposition.
Although the new owners of PSG have conquered France by investing heavily in Ligue 1, including the creation of the beIN Sport chain which will give the club 150 million euros per year until 2016. The company holds one of five rights packages for Ligue 1
and a time will come when they will make it hard for Canal Plus to hold on to the other four packages.
And it is not only football that is being helped in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 by that. The local rugby Super League will have a few benefits too. Right now, beIN is broadcasting all the home games of local rugby giants Catalan Dragons and in future, will have other teams as
well.
Paris Saint-Germain’s sporting model is not as mean as it sounds. However, the same cannot be said of AS Monaco who have a clear advantage over the capital club which will be discussed in the next part.
