  3. When The Duchess of Edinburgh(Princess Elizabeth) succeeded to the Throne in 1952, Her mother (Queen Elizabeth) and Her Grandmother (Queen Mary) were both still alive. Officially, Queen Mary became The Queen Mother in 1936, however, as anyone who has read anything about Queen Mary will tell you, She was a formidable Lady. She did not like the title and continued to be known as Queen Mary. In 1952 Queen Mary officially became The Dowager Queen Mother as the new Queen's mother became The Queen Mother. Again, Queen Mary simply continued with her style of Queen Mary.  There is a famous and very poignant photograph of the New Queen, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Queen Mary all in mourning clothes awaiting for the arrival of the coffin of the late King. It is usually referred to as "The Three Queens". The Queen is known for being very fond of Her late Grandmother and apparently talks a lot about Her. I personally think that The Queen has a look of Queen Mary.

  4. The term Queen Mother is a modern invention of the late Queen Elizabeth, aka The Queen Mother. Prior to the Queen ascending to the throne, there had not been a Queen Mother. The mothers of the previous queens of England were either dead (in the case of Elizabeth I) or wasn't a queen (in the case of Victoria).

Queen Mary was technically a dowager, but simply went by Queen Mary. Others may have referred to her as the Dowager Queen, but that is not how she saw herself and she did not style herself as such.

Also at the time that Queen Mary and her husband reigned, she, like Victoria would have been Queen Empress. The late Queen Mother was also, for a time, Queen Empress. Then when Indian independence was granted she remained simply Queen.

If you recall her funeral service, the Archbishop referred to the First Star of India, which was a reference to her and a title she maintained.

  5. Queen Dowager or Dowager Queen is a title or status generally held by the widow of a deceased king. Its full meaning is clear from the two words from which it is composed: queen indicates someone who served as queen consort (i.e. wife of a king), while dowager indicates a widow who holds the title from her deceased husband. (A queen who rules in her own right and not due to marriage to a king is a queen regnant.)

Queen mother is a title or position reserved for a widowed queen consort (a queen dowager) whose son or daughter from that marriage is the reigning monarch. The queen's eldest son/daughter would normally be crowned as successor upon the king's death, leaving the new king's mother often still alive, but no longer holding any official position. Therefore, the title of "queen mother" identifies the widow of the deceased former king, and mother of the currently reigning king.

Finally, it is possible for there to be a queen mother and one or more queen dowagers alive at any one time. This situation occurred in the period between the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952 and the death of her paternal grandmother on 24 March 1953. For slightly over a year, there were three queens in the Commonwealth realms:

    1. Queen Elizabeth II, the reigning monarch.

    2. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, the widow of the recently deceased King George VI and the mother of the reigning queen. Queen Elizabeth, the former queen consort, specifically adopted the appellation Queen Mother to distinguish herself from her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II. She reportedly loathed being referred to as a dowager Queen.

    3. Queen Mary, the widow of King George V, the mother of the former king Edward VIII (the then Duke of Windsor) and of the late King George VI. Queen Mary had been the queen mother between the death of her husband in 1936 and the accession of her granddaughter in 1952. However, she continued to be titled and styled Her Majesty Queen Mary.
