  1. I do not think the monarchy has a place in 21st century Britain.  I think its about time we had a democratic change.

And all the royalists out there, don't come on and give the tired old c**p about the monarchy being good for tourism.  France doesn't have a monarch and they don't have a problem with tourism

  2. I've never seen a website comparison but it'd be cheaper to keep her.   In a republic, you'd still have a PM and a president and each  president would get a big fat pension afte they get run out of office that could equal their salery.  Plus, think of the upkeep on former presidents' houses that's now a national treasure and the security that each living ex pres receives.    It's staggering.

At least she speaks well, doesn't wink at foreign heads of state and doesn't do stupid things like our king, King George II.   God save the U.S.from trhe poor grammar, poor advice and even worse decisions that's coming out that place called the White House.

  3. yes they bring in more from tourism than they cost

  4. Manys the republic with dreadful health services, over-crowded prisons etc.

  5. A republic.  The monarchy is supposed to represent the people, the queen does not  in any way represent me.

  6. The Monarchy brings so much extra revenue into this country by so many means it would be wrong to get rid of them just because we could.

The Payments that are made to the crown have diminshed considerably over the past 20 years and most of the money is created by the Monarchy in revenue, sales of produce (The Duchy of Cornwall line is extremley popular) and on interest generated by its own savings.

I would vote no to get rid of them.

  7. the monarchy is mostly self funding, most of the money goes to te upkeep of the houses which are huge tourist attractions

it the UK was a republic the costs would be the same

  8. The tourist argument for keeping them is full of holes. If we got rid of them, tourists could do more than take photos of Buck Palace: they could have a look inside. Besides it misses the point: the monarchy prop up all the ugliness and snobbery associated with our ridiculous and antiquated class attitudes - the sooner we ship them off to the States the better...

  9. Monarchy every time. It fits in with the British mind set. We are a former empire, not a third rate banana republic. We need and deserve style and dignity in all our state functions and ceremonies and this works best with a Monarchy.

If you think getting rid of the Monarchy would make a jot of difference to injustices in the British way of life, you are very sadly deluded!!

  10. Republic - definitely!!!!! - AND I'll be first President and Chief Commissar!!!!

  11. Certainly not. Although born in England I have lived in Australia almost my entire life without taking citizenship. I will only do this when (not if) Australia becomes a republic. I refuse to take part in a ceremony that would require me to swear allegiance to the queen of what I consider to be a foreign country supporting a greedy inbred so-called "royal" family. Royal my ****!

  12. We should go for the republic, but keep the monarchy in a zoo, or museum or a Disney Land type set up for the tourists.  OK that's a nuts idea.  But no seriously, it's an idea that's out lived it's time.

  14. ilive in sapin. here we had a republic and then the monarchy returned.

the republic was more expensive that the actual monarchy.

the King of spain have 8 millions of euros for year. the king has 30 years in the throne. in this time,France has have about 15 president. each president cost about 30-40 millions. the presidents that left their job have a pension.

    in 30 years, 15 presidents with a pension, 1 president with 35 millions=.......................

  15. I personally am a monarchist. But I am also a realist. I know that the monarchy will eventually be abolished. At the moment however, I believe the Queen gives good value for money. She has commited herself to her duty fully and avoided any of the scandals that have surrounded the younger members of the family. Also, she has been moving in political circles and has known personally most of the world leaders over the past fifty years. This means that her political knowledge is vast and due to her policy of impartiality she is in a perfect position to advise the government of the day.

However, following the death of the Queen I cannot see the monarchy surviving much longer. I do not believe Charles could ever be half the monacrch that Elizabeth has been and as yet reliatively little is known about the fitness of William to rule.
