Monet's Garden receives warm welcome back at Greystoke
The news that Monet’s Garden, the much celebrated and loved grey who has been battling a severe infection of the hoof for quite some time now, is finally back home at trainer Nicky Richards’s Greystoke yard has delighted fans and connections alike and has
brought much relief to the staff at Greystoke.
The seasoned racehorse, who is now thirteen years old and is a triple Grade 1 winner, had been undergoing treatment under the care of the skilled vets at the Oakland’s Veterinary Centre in Cleveland since late last year. Only now has the horse been allowed
by the vets in charge to return to Greystoke after a steady and certain improvement in his health was observed and confirmed.
Richards’s daughter, Joey is the current caretaker of Monet’s Garden and the trainer himself has expressed extreme happiness and relief over the wonderful news as he believes it has appeared as a ray of sunshine in the dark clouds that have been plaguing
him for the past few weeks.
The trainer spoke to news reporters at the Kelso racecourse and told them that everyone at Greystoke has given Monet’s Garden a very warm welcome, as he is well loved there and his absence was missed at the yard. He told reporters that Joey informed him
that the horse is in his box, taking his time in adjusting to the old yet new surroundings.
Monet’s Garden’s recovery was nothing short of a slow miracle as chances of recovery from the hoof infection he contracted after the victory at the Old Roan Chase at Aintree for the third time in October were declared slim and Richards was advised by two
vets to put him down, which the trainer refused.
The grey was put on antibiotics and showed no signs of improvement until late January, and his progress remained steady ever since.
Everyone at Greystoke is overjoyed to receive good news especially since it has only been a short while since the loss of Money Trix, another one of Richards’s popular greys. Owned by Craig Bennett, the 11-year-old who sustained a grave injury in Saturday’s
Hennessey gold Cup at Leopardstown had to be put down as there was no chance of recovery for the horse.
