  1. Well what i would do it make it a flat rate pay. That way they cant "take their time" and get paid for more hours that they were jackin around ya know!! depending on how big your house is if its got more than one story, and the quality that you are looking for. Look on craigslist.org. I see ads for painters on there all the time. go to labor or skilled trade. Good luck

  2. Hourly is a bad choice because they might be slow. Get references and pros to do the job or get friends to help you for free or for pizza!!

Painters vary in quality A LOT!!! Be Careful!

  3. 50 cents above minimum wage, of course.

Or, you could just pay a lump payment, and divide it between 2 or 3.

  4. It's always tricky when you hire help for anything when they aren't professionals. If you pay by hour, they may lag and by job they may hurry and do bad job. Speaking from experience. If you want someone like that, ask for references of some sort. Otherwise, get professional. Hourly would be okay if you can keep an eye on them. But who really wants to do that.

  5. Flat rate, definitely.  Tell them the sq. footage of your house (or the room that you need painted) and asak them for a flat rate. I would try to negotiate if they are self-employed and not through an agency.

I just paid $350 to have my great room done, vaulted ceilings.  It only took him 4 hours to do :(  Don't let them take advantage of you!

  6. Well I just had the exterior of a 1300 sq ft house painted for $1,200.00 but that included the paint and all the materials.  And over half of the house is brick.

  7. I'm definitely no pro but I charge per job, not per hour to paint the exterior of houses. The last one I did, the lady provided the paints, I had to supply everything else, and there was a flat rate that was paid when the job was complete. Unless you are there to keep an eye on things, I wouldn't pay per hour. Then again, I know a few local painters that ARE paid hourly but they are very trust worthy and are not slackers at all, so it really depends on the person and their references.

    Good luck!
