Question:

Money for trip to Costa Maya and Cozumel?

I am traveling with my family to Costa Maya and Cozumel next summer. I do not have to pay for meals or excursions, just souvenirs, food off ship, etc. Is there somewhere online that can tell me the average price of things? Are things expensive, cheap, average? I have to save the money up so I want an estimate of prices.

  1. Hi,

You'll have no problem if you bring about $150.00 for your day on Cozumel. Ships don't' spent more that 10 or 12 hours in San Miguel. If your ship docks at the downtown Cruise Ship Pier you'll be right downtown in San Miguel. If you stop at the Royal Caribbean dock there will be an entire shopping center right off your ship. It this is the case you will have to take a Taxi into town for about $6.00 one-way.

Food is average, there is a "Hard Rock Cafe" downtown and of course you'll find "Senior Frogs and Carlos & Charlies" all these places serve food and drinks.

Souveniers can be cheep if you work the dealers. Here is your best bet to get the best deals you can. Barter, negotiate, even if you have to walkaway. The entire sales force is a Union, much like the Taxi Service. They have a set low price they will sell items for you have to find that price, don't let they ask you what you will pay, do the reverse and tell them what you will pay. It can become fun working the dealers for the item you like and what you can get it for.

My bride and I were in Coz this past July and we picked up T-shirts for under $10.00 each.  There are places that sell 2 for $10.00, or even 6 for $20.00, you have to look for what you want. If you are looking for Gold or Silver or even gems be very carful you had better know what you are looking for or you will be taken advantage of.

Hope this helps you get what you want!!!!

  2. So i guess you are on a cruise ship that you have paid for your excursion on board already. You asked are things expensive, cheap, average and the answer is yes to all of them. Depends on what things you are looking for. As for the food its cheap you wont break the bank with that one. Souvenirs are for the most part cheap but then again you didn't specify. Souvenirs like key chains, shirts, small statues are cheap on average of 5-20 dollars. Don't forget in Mexico everything can be negotiated prices are not set in stone except for some hard nosed people in that case just keep moving you most likely find it somewhere else. For the short time the ship is at dock you wont need more than $100 unless you are a heavy spender.
