Money gram question?

i am purchasing something for 1000$ and the seller is suggesting money gram. they live across country. my question is, is money gram safe? what happens if they turn out to be a fraud and I need to prevent the 1000 from being cashed?

Don't use Moneygram to pay for something that you're buying.  The reason they want you do this is because if it's fraud and you send a check in the mail, then it woud be Mail Fraud which is a federal crime.  If you use Moneygram, then it wouldn't be a federal crime and much harder to prosecute.
