  1. Have you clicked on ANY emails that have asked for your banking or paypal information?  Even if the email looked completely legit, and the site looked exactly what you see everyday, you could have been a victim of "phishing".

It happened to me and they took $997 (right under the daily limit for email money transfer - Canada) out of my account one day.   I noticed at 11:30 pm and contacted the bank right away.  They froze my account and told me it was a good thing I noticed when I did because they were likely coming back at midnight to take another $1000.

I did get thew money back, the bank took care of everything.  I needed a new debit card, password, etc.

Since then, I know that banks and paypal will never send you an email asking you to update your information.  Whenever I get an email like that (whether its an institution I have accounts with, or not), I find the banks website and get their email to report phishing and forward the email to them.  They can then disable the website so that if anyone does click on it, it will be a blank page, and fewer people will be ripped off.

  2. Yes you should close the bank account or cancel the card depending how they got access to your account. If it was done via a cash card/debit card then you can do a charge back (if it is a small amount) if its a large amount then you can do a fraud report with your bank. you are covered for the full amount as long as you have nothing to do with the transaction. if you file a fraud claim and they find out it was your transaction they will not like this and in the worst Case will close your account. make sure you cannot relate to the transaction first of all.

  3. Go and see your bank manager, it would appear to be them at fault if you did not authorise the payment.

  4. Phone your bank straight away - most banks have 24 hour call centres now.

  5. If you haven't already, close the account at the bank that paypal is drawn on.  When things are settled create an account that you use only for paypal.

I've heard that paypal is good about investigating so make sure you cooperate fully with them and make any security adjustments you need.

Also check your other information to make sure you aren't a victim of identity theft.

Make a report if there is anything hinky about your credit cards or other finances.
