Money or travelers checks?

do i need cash on the ship like for the casino or can i take travelers checks if i take the checks can i cash them on the boat ? thanks for all answers

I take both as most rooms have a safe to lock your extra money & personal items in. You will need cash at the casino but you can also cash your travelers checks on board. I found in Mexico you can buy cheaper with cash. mexico also adds an additional fee on to charges( at least they dis with us) we spend quite a bit on 3 pieces. We didn't realize the additional charge until we received the bill.

Most boats you cannot use cash or checks for anything, everything must be charged to your room. Casinos are a different story. You can certainly bring cash, and play. They do have a cashiers window and you can with limits get cash advances from your credit card, but the fees will kill you. I don't see why they would not cash a travelors check, but its best to check with your specific cruise line or travel agent. You will need cash at any destination or a credit card.

Really the only place you will bneed cash is the casino, and in port.

Most cruise ships ask you to register a credit card at the start of the voyage, thereafter you just sign for everything aboard and it's charged to your card at the end of the voyage.

I expect you can use travellers' cheques instead, if you must, but I would use them only to exchange for any foreign currency you need ashore. You may get a better rate ashore than buying it on the ship - but on the other hand, the latter saves looking for an exchanger.

YES - cash for the casino!!!  And the ship will cash travelors checks for you.

Tip on the casino - slots are always the loosest the first night out - (they want to keep you coming back).  I've hit the $1000 jackpots several times.   Stay away from the casino on the last night.

Visa

Cash brings with it a risk of loss from theft.  Traveler's Checks are safer but you may run into trouble cashing them.  The bursur will be able to cash them for you though.  But then that leaves you carrying cash.

Visa is relatively safe and most places (worldwide) have access to ATM machines in the tourist and travel locations.  Be careful with your foreign exchange - it's easy to get charged fees that are a very high percentage.

I prefer to take both. Onboard you can use your set sail pass for everything, including the casino. At the end when you settle your bill you can use either the cash or travelers checks instead of your credit card. Yes the pursers desk will cash them for you. If you're going to the Caribbean US dollars are widely accepted and preferred at most ports. A lot of the street vendors only take cash. For purchasing at the stores I use travelers checks or my credit card.
