Every night money is counted put in a envilope, initialed and dated and droped in the safe. Last night i left them moneys on the counter and forgot about it. Of course the money wasnt there in the morning and there were 2 people that opened up the office. One of them took it. Now my employer is demanding since I did not get the money in the safe that i have to pay it back from my check next week(automatically deducted). This is not the first time this has happened, but last time it happened to my coworker. Is this legal? I live in florida, hillsborough county. I know it is my fault and i know the conciquences disputing this can hurt my job, pay, or even get me fired. But i dont belive it is right, i think small and big buisness should expect loss. Please dont even respond about how i stole it. Theifs would not go through this trouble to research this. Also I cant seem to find the right government website to ask a actual person that would know. Thanks so much

  1. I think they probably do have a right to collect from you. If you're in a union shop then ask your union steward to see if there's anything in your contract that would prohibit them.

But from your story I doubt that's the case.  So if I were in your shoes, I'd appeal to my boss and admit that you're responsible for the loss and could they perhaps let you pay back the money in installments.

Mention that it's obvious to you that another employee is the one who collected the money from your mistake, and they should evaluate the other staff carefully.

  2. this is illegal practice!!!

contact the FL State Attorney General (Bill Mc Cullum) immediately and tell them what happened. whoever is deducting the money from your check will be fined!! And if your employer does anything against you you can sue them for retaliation!!

    God Bless America!!

  3. The money is your responsibility and your employer expects to have the money at the end of the day, it is not his fault that you lost it or forgot it.

Look at it this way, if he did not deduct it from you or your coworker. Next time you or your coworker can take the money and say it was stolen and then one day your employer will close down the business

  4. ~~If you live in California it is totally illegal. They can write you up or even fire you, but they absolutely can't take money out of your wages. In fact if anyone had access to the money other than you they would have a very difficult time even writing you up. Contact your labor board and find out what rights you have. This is horrible, I wish you all the luck in getting YOUR moneyy back!~~

  5. yes its legal because if you are in charge of the money then you are the person responsible for that money! NO MATTER WHAT!!! i know it sucks but thats life for ya!
