Hi,

I want to apply to the US embassy from UK to get a 2 week visa.

How much money should I have in my account to show the bank statement to my consular officer interviewing me?

For example, to apply to the French embassy, one has to show that he/she has at least 40Euros (or may 80, I forgot) for Every day he/she needs to spend in France/Schengen zone,

any similar rule for the Americans?

Thanks

  1. I am not sure that applies anymore. What you are applying for is a Tourist Visa, which allows you to stay up to 3 months. You still must show proof that you have a round trip ticket for your visit.

  2. Consuls have blanket authority to decide what are the standards they would apply on a case to case basis.

Sometimes, proof of funds may be evidenced by providing banks and credit card statements up to 4 months ago. You funds in the bank must be a little more than the cost of a round trip plane ticket, cost of daily hotel charges for the duration of your stay, food and miscellaneous expenses. Your credit card balance should not be more than 25% of your credit limit.

Sometimes, if your certificate of employment shows you earn more than the average American, then sometimes that is good enough.

Bottom line is you must prove that you intend on coming back to the UK after the visit. Money or not.**

  3. as far as i know you have to show a bank statement to the consular office ..

  4. There is no hard, fast rule.  You simply need to show that you can afford the round trip airfare, hotels, meals, entertainment, and miscellaneous expenses during your visit.  If you added extra money now right before your interview, they would easily surmise that you are padding your account in order to get the visa.
