Monfils and Fognini remain tied at French Open
After Gael Monfils and Fabio Fognini failed to complete their second round French Open match as darkness engulfed centre court at Roland Garros on day four, rain has now delayed the end of their match even further.
Play on day five of the clay court Grand Slam was delayed by close to four hours due to inclement weather before the first scheduled matches of the day got underway.
Monfils and Fognini were scheduled to recommence what had been a tense encounter in the second match on Philippe Chatrier Court today, but with a second rain interruption postponing the conclusion of the match between Jelena Jankovic and Kaia Kanepi in the third set the wait now stretches longer still.
Thirteenth seeded Monfils and his Italian opponent were tied at two sets apiece and 5-5 in the deciding fifth set when poor light finally halted play close to 10pm on Wednesday night.
Fognini had wanted play to be halted at 4-4 in the fifth set as the night set in, but Monfils was keen to continue and two more games – during which Fognini accumulated three match points – were completed before play was finally suspended for the day.
